Jupiter: orbit Galilean Moons

To visualize the orbits of the Galilean Moons around Jupiter I used 11 images, taken over the last few months.

Visualizing the orbits (using Matlab software):
Step 1: Rotated each image until the orbit of the Galilean Moons was horizontal.
Step 2: Determined the position of the visible moons by measuring the distance from Jupiter to each moon in each image in pixels.
Step 3: Plotted the data: x-axis: position of jupiter and the Galilean Moons in pixels, y-axis: date & time.

Step 1: Using a sinus fit through the generated data, both the orbital diameter [pixels] and the orbital period [days] of all 4 Galilean Moons can be estimated:

Jupiter: retrograde loop

To make the orbit of Jupiter visible against the background stars I used 18 images taken over the last few months.

Visualizing the orbit:
Step 1: Rotated each image until the orbit of the Galilean Moons was horizontal.
Step 2: Aligned the images on Iota Capricornus, a star visible on all images.

On October 13, 2009 the more or less linear orbit of Jupiter changed into the opposite direction. I had captured the end of the 2009 retrograde loop of Jupiter!

After my first image of the moon I pointed my camera at Jupiter. The result was even more impressive than my first lunar shot.

Although only 14 pixels wide, the planet diameter of Jupiter was clearly visible:

Nefertiti, the bust. Is it fake?: 2009

The world famous bust of queen Nefertiti on display in the Egyptian Museum of Berlin.


















Her elegant and chiselled features held proud and high on a swanlike neck, she has been smiling serenely for 3,400 years. At least that has long been the popular and scientific belief that draws half a million tourists to see her in Berlin every year.

But now doubt has been thrown on the authenticity of the painted limestone and plaster bust of the 18th dynasty Egyptian queen Nefertiti by two authors who claim she is a fake.

According to a Swiss art historian, the bust is less than 100 years old. Henri Stierlin has said the stunning work that will later this year be the showpiece of the city's reborn Neues Museum was created by an artist commissioned by Ludwig Borchardt, the German archaeologist credited with digging Nefertiti out of the sands of the ancient settlement of Amarna, 90 miles south of Cairo, in 1912.


















In his book, Le Buste de Nefertiti – une Imposture de l'Egyptologie? (The Bust of Nefertiti – an Egyptology Fraud?), Stierlin has claimed that the bust was created to test ancient pigments. But after it was admired by a Prussian prince, Johann Georg, who was beguiled by Nefertiti's beauty, Borchardt, said Stierlin, "didn't have the nerve to make his guest look stupid" and pretended it was genuine.

Berlin author and historian Edrogan Ercivan has added his weight to the row with his book Missing Link in Archaeology, published last week, in which he has also called Nefertiti a fake, modelled by an artist on Borchardt's statuesque wife.

Public and political enthusiasm about the find at the time gave the artefact its "own dynamic" and led to Borchardt ensuring it was kept out of the public gaze until 1924, the authors have argued.

He kept it in his living room for the next 11 years before handing it over to a Berlin museum, since when it has been one of the city's main tourist attractions.

The statue was famously admired by Adolf Hitler, who referred to it as "a unique masterpiece, an ornament, a true treasure".

Recent radiological tests carried out on the statue by Berlin's Charite hospital supposedly proved that the bust is indeed more than 3,000 years old. The tests uncovered a hidden face carved into the statue's limestone core. But Stierlin has argued that while it is possible to carbon date the pigments, which appear to be ancient Egyptian, it is impossible to accurately date the bust because it is made of stone covered in plaster.

Other aspects of the find, which he has claimed support his theory, are the facts that the bust has no left eye, which the ancient Egyptians would have considered a sign of disrespect towards their much-loved queen, and that the first scientific reports on the discovery were not written up for 11 years.

Borchardt's diary entries remain the main written account of the find. He wrote: "Suddenly we had in our hands the most alive Egyptian artwork. You cannot describe it with words. You must see it."

A few days after my trip I saw the movie Lost in Translation. Just back from Tokyo the experiences of the main characters were a déjà vu to me. I have experienced this amazing city the same way. I am still not sure if you should see the movie before or after you visit Tokyo, in both cases Lost in Translation is a must see!

Aletsch Glacier, a victim of global warming: 2005

The Aletsch Glacier, one of Switzerland's most impressive landmarks, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001. With a length of 23 km, it is the longest stream of ice in the Alps.

Grand Canyon, below the rim: 2004

GRAND CANYON VILLAGE - De Grand Canyon in het echt zien is ondanks de horden toeristen een belevenis. Niets, ook niet alle films en foto's bijelkaar, bereidt je voor op de grootse realiteit. En dan te weten dat die majestueuze wereld eigenlijk pas echt begint onder de bovenrand, oftewel de Rim.

Voor de ware Canyon-ervaring moet je lopen en afzien. Letterlijk tot de bodem gaan. Al na twee uur afdalen ben je helemaal alleen in een wonderland, een stipje in het miljoenen jaren oude landschap. De Grand Canyon afdalen is geen zondagmiddagwandeling door het bos. Maar het is onvergetelijk. De dappere 'hiker' wordt vorstelijk beloond voor de pijn in de knieën bij de zes uur durende steile afdaling, de ondragelijke hitte beneden van 40 graden zonder wind of schaduw of de ijzige kou in de wintermaanden.

Elk jaar vragen enkele duizenden een zogenoemde backcountrypermit ($10) aan, een vergunning om in de Grand Canyon te mogen overnachten. Slechts een deel ervan wordt gehonoreerd. Het aanvraagformulier moet bijna een half jaar van tevoren worden ingediend, met de exacte data van voorgenomen route en gewenste overnachtingsplekken.

Afdalen en dezelfde dag weer omhoog klimmen, is letterlijk gekkenwerk. Jaarlijks moeten er tientallen stoere betweters, het overgrote deel mannen tussen de 18 en 30 jaar, uit de Canyon worden gedragen, meestal vanwege uitdroging en uitputting. Die dachten het verticale hoogteverschil van bijna anderhalve kilometer vanaf de Rim beneden naar de Colorado River, snel genoeg te kunnen doen om er daarna ook weer in redelijke tijd uit te komen.

In de aangeraden 'klassieke' route ga je in één dag omlaag over de smalle, steile South Kabab Trail (10,3 km), overnacht je op de Phantom Ranch op de bodem, klim je de volgende dag over de Bright Angel Trail 7,5 km naar Indian Gardens waar je in de buitenlucht overnacht, en overwin je de laatste dag bijna een kilometer hoogteverschil naar de South Rim.

Naar de bodem van de Grand Canyon gaan kent behalve fysieke ook praktische uitdagingen. Alleen in de zomermaanden, de slechtste tijd om te gaan, is er langs de paden drinkwater. Je moet dus liters vocht meedragen. Ook het eten is problematisch. Op de bodem van de Canyon ligt weliswaar de fameuze Phantom Ranch, waar je maanden voor de geplande tocht een prijzig diner, ontbijt en middagmaal-in-een-doos kunt bestellen. Maar de Indian Gardens liggen midden in een oase op een plateau en daar zal in elk geval zelf voor het eten gezorgd moeten worden. Voor de budgetbewuste 'hiker' betekent de Grand Canyon gewoon dat je een brandertje, pot en eten meezeult. Daar komt bij dat alles wat je meeneemt, je er ook weer uit moet dragen. Aan vuilnisbakken doet men niet in de Canyon. Intussen dragen de meeste wandelaars ook nog een tentje, matje, slaapzak en regenkleding op de rug.

Er zijn geen woorden voor wat je voelt als je eindelijk naast de kolkende, bruine Colorado River staat en omhoog kijkt naar die Rim daar, vanwaar de toeristen de rivier niet eens kunnen zien, of de kick van het slapen in je tentje op de bodem. Noch voor het gevoel als je twee dagen later, drijfnat van een snijdende hagelbui, de rand weer bereikt, bekaf, zwetend, hongerig, verlangend naar een douche, terwijl voor je neus een bus Japanners met digitale camera's wordt uitgeladen voor een uurtje staren in de prachtige diepte. Ach... als ze eens wisten.

Antelope Canyon, the Crack: 2004

Upper Antelope Canyon, one of the most impressive landscapes on Earth. The Navajo call it Tse bighanilini, which means "the place where water runs through rocks". After our first visit in 1995 we had to return to this world famous slot canyon. This time we where lucky: a ray of sunlight piercing Upper Antelope Canyon, and no tourists to disturb it!
